America Without God is Dead
A friend of mine, an intelligent gentleman who has some considerable experience in state politics - believes that winning elections is everything. To do that, in his thinking, one must do whatever it takes to win. It's that simple - compromise anything, negotiate anything, never stand on principle - especially religious principle - but do be a whore, painted up with plenty of lipstick, rouge and mascara, decorated out amply in shiny beads and spangles, and flaunting plenty of bouncy B&B - whatever it takes to attract the attention of the local joes - the electorate.
And please, says he, no principles! No down-home moral values - and absolutely no religion. Religion and religious principles are not only undesirable in politics, says he, they are anathema. One should no more expect success in winning elections by preaching basic principles and Judeo/Christian moral values than anticipating a big Sunday church meeting turnout out from the whores on 7th Avenue.
What I believe my friend fails to understand is that he’s shooting at the wrong target. The task at hand is not winning an election but saving of the Republic - two very different things. The great constitutional Republic of the United States of America is today in greater peril than at any time since its founding.
Remembering that a problem incorrectly defined cannot be solved, is our patriotic problem simply the winning of the next election or is it something more fundamental and profound?
If we agree that the correct definition of the problem is to save the Republic, how shall we proceed? Will the winning of an election do it? Republicans - purported conservatives - have won more elections in recent history than they have lost, yet still today the Republic is facing existential threats - greater threats than ever before.
True, as my friend asserts, on occasion - especially in the presence of an intellectually, morally and spiritually corrupt electorate - an election surely can be won by amorally whoring along the way to victory - that, after all, has long been the strategy of the Democrat Party - but the Republic, as we have seen, will never be saved simply by winning elections. There is a difference between winning an election - or any number of elections - and saving the Republic.
A critical starting point is to ask, what is the American Republic? As any student of philosophy, religion and history knows, America is an idea - a construct of God-based libertarian philosophy and Judeo/Christian religious beliefs and values focused on individual human liberty. My election-focused friend, who shares with me LDS religious affiliation (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) - with its doctrine clearly establishing the divinely inspired origins of America - should understand this, but he clearly does not. Scripturally based LDS doctrine declares that if the people of America ever turn away from the God of their fathers - after all God has done for them, turning like dogs to their vomit - they will fall, as did the apostate ancient Israelites.
Obviously, belief in the Judeo/Christian God sits at the very center of the American idea. This is the God, the creator of mankind, who, from the first words he uttered in the world, spoke of right and wrong, good and evil, morality and immorality, and gave commandments to guide his children in the path of safety and happiness, along with warnings of what would happen if they chose to disobey. That God gave man freedom - inalienable rights - rights that cannot justly be taken from him by other men.
America, then, reduced to its essence, is an intellectual, moral and spiritual construct designed to one purpose and one purpose only - to protect the inalienable, God-given rights of individuals.
Take God out of America, as its enemies seek to do, and its essential reason for being ceases to exist. It becomes an empty shell - a pushover - and the light of liberty goes out.
Without God, there is no absolute argument for human liberty. If God does not exist, then there is no such thing as God-given inalienable rights. If such absolute rights do not exist, then, as history fulsomely attests, human society becomes nothing more than a brutal contest for power - a no-holds-barred battle to determine who shall have power to tell everybody else what to do. The Constitution and the rule of law mean nothing in such an environment. POWER is all there is. POWER is the only good. To get it, anything goes. The end - POWER - justifies any and all means, whatever it takes… As we have seen, that is exactly how the Godless, lawless Democrat Left understands and engages in American politics.
The American Republic - a civil society of free men and women governed by the rule of law - will prosper and endure only as long as it continues to embrace its God-based intellectual, moral and spiritual identity - an identity that exalts God-given human liberty as the supreme value. If we betray ourselves by abandoning that identity, as we have been in process of doing over the past generation, we will fail and fall. America - the land of the free and home of the brave - will be no more. Arguably, subsequent to the well-documented theft of the 2020 election, it has already fallen. America, at the moment, is no longer governed by the voice of the people. For the time being, at least until election integrity is restored, “government of the people, by the people, for the people” has indeed “perished from the earth”.
Accordingly, the sad truth is that winning an election or two - especially in the face of massive election fraud - won’t save America. The real driver of our fate as a nation is the intellectual, moral and spiritual substance of the people. That collective substance is inexorably expressed, for good or ill, in the quality of the leadership we choose or allow to take power. As the old saying has it, “The people get the government they deserve.” How our chosen leaders label themselves - Republican or Democrat - is irrelevant. What they do - the quality of their character - whether they are good or evil - whether they pursue to cause of human liberty - is everything - and for an entire generation they have not done right by us.
Regardless of which political party wins future elections, the Republic, short of the shedding of blood, can now only be saved and will only be saved by means of a national repentance and a wholehearted return to the libertarian philosophy and Judeo/Christian values of the Founding. One can only imagine what sort of refining fire and burning away of dross the nation will have to endure to bring that about, if indeed it is possible at all.
A God-fearing America will prosper. A Godless America will fall.
These are the times that try men’s souls…
